Gary Kirsten will hold discussions over the role of England head coach with ECB director of cricket Ashley Giles on Wednesday, Sky Sports News understands.
Kirsten is the leading candidate to substitute Trevor Bayliss, who stepped down following the Ashes series against Australia.
Sky Sports News comprehends the interview procedure is continuing and that Giles can be meeting other hopefuls.
The 51-year-old has previous experience of coaching that is international, having appreciated spells in charge of India and South Africa before in his profession.
Giles has previously stated his preference as head coach for an Englishman, together with Chris Silverwood – the current quick bowling coach – regarded yet another front-runner because of his experience at Essex.
Surreys Alec Stewart has also been linked with the function, as has Englands batting coach Graham Thorpe and Ireland coach Graham Ford.
Giles will hope to appoint a new head coach in time for Englands tour of New Zealand, that begins on November 1 with a T20 global in Christchurch.
